A trade fair or festival is a city built in a week, run for days and dismantled overnight, and its economics are judged on numbers nobody actually measures: how many really came, which areas worked, whether exhibitors and sponsors got the audience they paid for. Ticket systems count the gate. Everything inside the gate, the flows, the queues, the zones that never got discovered, has traditionally been folklore.
Temporary grounds, real measurement
The measurement matches the venue’s lifecycle. Portable, anonymous counting deploys during build-up, covers the event footprint (entrances, stages, halls, food courts, sponsor areas) and is gone with the teardown. LiDAR carries outdoor and low-light zones without a camera anywhere; Wi-Fi based measurement reads flows across the grounds; together they deliver the full metric set on a site that did not exist a week earlier. No fixed infrastructure, no footage, no personal data: numbers about the event, never about a visitor.
During the event: capacity and flow, live
While the gates are open, the measurement is operational. Live occupancy per zone with crowd alerts gives operations warning before an area saturates; flow data shows which routes carry the pressure and which entrances underperform; queue build-up at food, toilets and transport becomes visible while there is still time to act. The same approach that manages arena crowds at break-time surges runs the festival’s Saturday peak.
After the event: the report that sells next year
The deepest value lands after teardown. Zone-by-zone attendance, dwell and flows become the event’s evidence: what exhibitors’ placements were actually worth, which sponsor areas delivered audience, how this year’s layout performed against last year’s, what the pop-up economics of each temporary bar and stand looked like. Organisers sell next year on this report; exhibitors decide on it. An event that can show its numbers charges for them.

Can measurement really be deployed for just a few days?
Yes, that is the design point. Temporary event deployments use portable sensors and the connectivity already on site, installed for the build-up and removed with the teardown. The measurement is scoped to the event footprint, and the data outlives the tents.
How is this different from ticket scans?
Tickets count admissions at the gate, once. Visitor measurement reads the whole event: how crowds distribute between stages and halls, where queues build, how long visitors stay, and how flows shift hour by hour. The gate tells you how many came; the measurement tells you what happened next.
Does this work for crowd safety?
It supports it. Live occupancy per zone and crowd alerts give operations minutes of warning as areas approach their limits, and flow data shows which routes actually carry the pressure. For formal crowd-safety planning, the same data becomes the evidence base your safety organisation works from.
What about privacy at a public event?
The measurement is anonymous by design: no cameras required, no personal data produced, no individual ever identified. Visitors are measured as flows and densities, which is exactly the standard a public event should hold its suppliers to.
