Airport passenger flow, queue and dwell time analytics

Airport operations are measured in minutes: the walk to security, the wait in the queue, the way to the gate and the time spent near the shops. Passenger flow, queue and dwell analytics measures those minutes with the Wi-Fi the terminal already runs, plus LiDAR where point precision matters, without cameras or personal data.

Wi-Fi and LiDAR, anonymised at source. No cameras pointed at passengers.

What makes it work

  • Queue, gate and dwell times

Security queue wait time, gate flows and dwell per zone are available live and as trends, so operations and retail plan on the same numbers.

  • Measured without cameras

Wi-Fi on the terminal's existing network and LiDAR where point precision matters, anonymised at source and approved by a data protection authority.

  • Operations and revenue on one source

Flow data supports capacity and staffing, and dwell data supports concession planning and rent. Both come from one measurement.

An airport runs on minutes, and most of them go unmeasured: the time a passenger stands in the security queue, the time spent near the shops before the gate call, and the build-up of a peak before anyone sees it. Passenger flow, queue and dwell analytics measures those minutes across the terminal, on infrastructure that is mostly already there.

What airports measure

The core measurements are passenger flows per entrance, security lane and gate; queue wait time and how queues build and clear; dwell per zone, from check-in to the gate; and occupancy and peaks across the day and the season. Available live and as baselines, the same numbers feed staffing, capacity decisions and the discussion with retail.

Queue wait time without cameras

Queue wait time is measured with Wi-Fi on the terminal’s existing network, plus LiDAR where point precision matters. The signals are anonymised at source, so no cameras are pointed at passengers and no personal data is created. The method is the only footfall method in Europe approved by a data protection authority, the Swedish IMY, which keeps the measurement out of the privacy debate a terminal otherwise invites.

Dwell time and non-aero revenue

For the retail side of a terminal, dwell is the metric to watch: how long passengers stay in each zone, where the flow passes and where it stops, and how a security wait or a gate change shifts the minutes they have left to spend. Decisions on concessions, rents and wayfinding are better grounded in measured dwell than in passenger totals alone.

Operations and capacity

The same measurement serves operations: live occupancy, peak build-up, lane and gate balancing, and before-and-after comparisons of schedule or layout changes. When flow, queue and dwell come from one source, operational and commercial decisions are based on the same numbers.

Getting started

Most terminals start on the Wi-Fi already in the building, with LiDAR units at the points where exact counts or queue metrics matter. Book a demo and we’ll show what the measurement looks like for your terminal.

We are excited about the collaboration with Bumbee Labs through our Unicorn Academy program. A fantastic solution that fits in most of our industry segments such as retail, transportation, public sector etc. We are happy to support Bumbee Labs with our expertise and global presence, and we are delighted to add such an innovative solution to our portfolio, to be offered standalone or integrated in our own solutions.

Frequently asked questions

How is airport queue wait time measured?

With Wi-Fi on the terminal's existing network, plus LiDAR where point precision matters. The signals are anonymised at source, so queue length and wait time are measured without cameras or personal data, both live and as trends.

Is passenger flow measurement GDPR compliant?

Bumbee Labs' Wi-Fi method is the only footfall method in Europe approved by a data protection authority, the Swedish IMY. Personal data is irrevocably deleted at source, leaving only anonymous, aggregated statistics.

Does it work in security areas?

Queue and wait time in security areas are measured passively and anonymously, without cameras pointed at passengers. Exactly what is measured where follows the airport's own operating rules, and the measurement is set up to fit them.

EU GDPR, approved

Privacy-compliant passenger measurement

Airport measurement from Bumbee Labs runs on the only footfall method in Europe approved by a data protection authority. You get full insight into the terminal without personal data, and without a camera debate in a sensitive environment.
