Train station passenger flow analytics: run the station on measured flow

A station is a schedule, a crowd and a trading place sharing one building. Passenger flow analytics measures all three: entrance flows, platform load, dwell and the retail minutes between trains, on infrastructure that is mostly already there.

Wi-Fi on the station's existing network and LiDAR where precision matters, with no cameras and no personal data.

What makes it work

  • Entrances, platforms, flows

Passenger flows per entrance, corridor and platform, so crowding, capacity and wayfinding are managed on measured numbers.

  • Measured without new hardware

Wi-Fi on the station's existing network, with LiDAR where point precision matters, anonymised at source.

  • The station as a trading place

Dwell and flow around retail and services, so placements and rents can be judged on passenger minutes rather than passenger totals.

A station publishes its schedule to the minute, then runs its day on estimates: how many people actually arrive, how long they wait, where they go, and where the crowd builds before anyone sees it. Train station passenger flow analytics replaces the estimates with a measured series, on infrastructure the station mostly already has.

What a station operator needs to know

The core numbers are entrance flows and how they distribute across corridors and platforms, platform load and peak build-up, dwell in the concourse and the retail, and movement between modes and levels. Read live and as baselines, they put staffing, safety margins, wayfinding and the retail conversation on the same evidence.

Measuring a station without new hardware

The measurement runs on the Wi-Fi network the station already operates, with LiDAR where point precision or queue metrics matter. Signals are anonymised at source, no cameras point at travellers, and no personal data is created. The method is the only footfall method in Europe approved by a data protection authority, the Swedish IMY, which keeps the measurement out of the privacy debate a public concourse otherwise invites.

Proven at Stockholm Central

Jernhusen, the station owner, runs the approach at Stockholm Central, one of the Nordics’ busiest stations. According to Jernhusen, reliable data from the measurement system lets them plan where service functions and stores are located and how doors and passages are adapted. A station with flows that large is the hardest case, and smaller stations use the same method.

Retail and services in the station

A station’s retail lives on the minutes between trains. Dwell and flow around the concourse and the platforms show where passengers wait, where they pass, and what a schedule or layout change does to the minutes available to spend, so placements, rents and opening hours can be judged on measured passenger minutes rather than passenger totals.

Getting started

Most stations start on the Wi-Fi already in the building, with LiDAR units at the points where exact counts or queue metrics matter. Book a demo and we’ll show your station as a measured system.

Telia's partnership with Bumbee Labs is important for us to expand our business. It allows us to develop our use cases for location and movement insights to be even more granular. By combining our anonymized and aggregated mobile network data with Bumbee Labs solution of GDPR-safe Wi-Fi probe data, we ensure that the collection of data follows the strictest guidelines of GDPR compliance all the way.

Frequently asked questions

How is passenger flow measured in a train station?

On the Wi-Fi network the station already operates, with LiDAR where point precision matters. Signals are anonymised at source, so entrance flows, platform load and dwell are measured without cameras and without personal data.

Is station passenger flow measurement GDPR compliant?

Bumbee Labs' Wi-Fi method is the only footfall method in Europe approved by a data protection authority, the Swedish IMY. Personal data is irrevocably deleted at source, leaving only anonymous, aggregated statistics.

Does it work for small stations too?

Yes. The method scales from a regional stop to a central station, and the measurement runs on the infrastructure already there, so the smallest station gets the same series as the largest.
