Xovis sensors

Xovis passenger counting

Xovis APS and APF sensors count passengers at the doors of buses, trams and trains, tell adults from children and detect wheelchairs, prams and bicycles. Everything is processed in the sensor. We help operators choose and integrate the sensors and turn the counts into planning data.

Xovis Certified Partner. APS and APF sensors for public transport.

Why Xovis for automatic passenger counting

  1. Counts that pass acceptance tests

Xovis APC sensors are market-proven and support VDV 457-2 acceptance testing, which shortens the slow process of proving a counting system.

  2. Fits the vehicle's IT

ITxPT and VDV-301 (IBIS-IP) are built in, along with MQTT, HTTPS and other protocols, and counting can start and stop with the door.

  3. Built for vehicles

Designed to withstand vibration, electromagnetic interference and wide temperature ranges, and to meet the railway and road standards operators require.

What Xovis APC sensors measure

Per door, stop and trip, these figures reach your dashboards and API:

  • Boardings and alightings per door and stop
  • Vehicle load between stops
  • Adults and children counted separately
  • Wheelchairs, prams and bicycles (object detection)
  • Occupancy of designated spaces such as bike and luggage areas

What is Xovis automatic passenger counting?

Automatic passenger counting (APC) means sensors above each vehicle door count who gets on and off at every stop. Xovis APS and APF sensors do it with 3D vision processed inside the sensor, which also lets them separate adults from children and spot wheelchairs, prams and bicycles. The result is load, boarding and space-use data per trip, without cameras recording passengers.

APS or APF: which series?

SeriesModelsGood to know
APSAPS-R for all vehicle types, APS-B compact for busesEstablished series; door event via input or ITxPT, or automatic start/stop detection
APFPoE and 12 to 36 V DC versionsNewest generation; AI door recognition, quicker installation, more processing power

What do operators use the data for?

  • Timetable and capacity planning. Load per trip and stop shows where to add or remove vehicles.
  • Accessibility and space on board. Counts of wheelchairs, prams and bicycles show how much space each line really needs.
  • Fare and revenue reporting. Counted boardings support fare settlement between operators and authorities.

How does it connect to the rest of the network?

Vehicle counts arrive in the same platform as station and platform flows from PC3 sensors or Wi-Fi, so platform crowding and vehicle load can be read together. See train station passenger flow for the station side.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the APS and the APF?

The APS is Xovis's established passenger counting series, with an APS-R for all vehicle types and a compact APS-B for buses. The APF is the newer generation: more processing power, a slimmer design and door recognition by AI, so no cable to the door system is needed and installation is quicker.

Which interfaces do the sensors support?

ITxPT and VDV-301 (IBIS-IP) come as standard, together with data pushes over MQTT, HTTPS, SFTP and other protocols. Counting can be tied to the door state through a digital input, ITxPT events or the sensor's own start/stop detection.

Can the sensors tell adults from children and detect objects?

Yes. Adult and child differentiation and the detection of wheelchairs, prams and bicycles are available as an object classification licence. They help operators plan space on board and support fare and accessibility reporting.

Do the sensors store images of passengers?

No. The 3D processing happens in the sensor and only counts and metadata are sent out. No passenger images are stored.

Can passenger counts be combined with station data?

Yes. Vehicle counts can sit next to station and platform flows from PC3 sensors or Wi-Fi in the same platform, so you see the journey from platform to vehicle.
