Know where your visitors come from, and when they come
A tourist destination can see which districts its visitors come from, how the season runs and where it gets busy. Anonymous counts by zone, hour and season, with mobile network data for origin, give the town or resort figures to plan from without identifying anyone.
For tourist destinations. Counts are anonymous and nobody is identified.
What the count shows
-
Where visitors come from
Visitor counts by origin district over time show whether each district sends more or fewer visitors. The data holds districts, with no home addresses.
-
Season against season
Visits are counted by zone, hour, day and season the same way throughout, so one season can be compared with the next.
-
Anonymous counting
The figures are anonymous, aggregated counts. Nobody is identified and no profiles are built.
Visitor counting for tourist destinations shows which districts visitors come from and how many visit each place, by hour and season. Mobile network data gives the origin, while Wi-Fi and LiDAR count visits and dwell time per zone. Bumbee Labs is the company behind the only footfall method in Europe approved by a data protection authority.
Which questions can visitor counting answer in a tourist destination?
Where do our visitors come from?
From mobile network data, a tourist destination can see which districts and towns its visitors travel from, and whether each district sends more or fewer visitors over time. The figures are anonymous counts by origin district, with no home addresses, and they show the catchment of the destination.
What does nature tourism mean for our town, and where should we invest?
For a town that draws visitors to nature, two measures can inform an investment: where visitors come from, measured with mobile network data, and the dwell time in the destination, counted per zone with Wi-Fi or LiDAR. Together they give the municipality a basis for deciding where to invest, and the decision rests with the town.
How does our season run, and when is it busiest?
A destination can read its season from the visitor count in the destination per zone by hour, day and season, counted the same way throughout as one continuous series. The same figures show the busiest days and the quiet months, and this season can be compared with the last.
Which other questions can a tourist destination put to its counts?
- Can we tell when a beach is getting full? LiDAR can give real-time occupancy across open areas, and the Crowd Alert add-on can warn when a zone passes a level you set.
- Does the car park fill on a high-summer weekend, and from what hour? Entries and exits counted by hour give parking occupancy against capacity, so the series shows the hour it fills.
How does visitor counting at a tourist destination work?
Where visitors come from is measured with mobile network data: anonymous, aggregated 4G and 5G network data at district scale that needs no app on anyone’s phone. At the places themselves, Wi-Fi counts how many people are present in a zone, and LiDAR gives exact counts at an entrance or across an open area, indoors and outdoors. The figures are anonymous, aggregated counts, and no personal data is produced.
What data does a destination get?
- Visitor counts by origin district over time, with no home addresses.
- Visits per zone by hour, day and season, counted the same way throughout.
- Dwell time per zone, from Wi-Fi or LiDAR at the place.
- Exact in and out counts at an entrance or gate where a LiDAR sensor is installed.
- Threshold alerts when a zone passes a level you set, through the Crowd Alert add-on.
- Standard figures arrive the day after the visit, and the data deliverables give the whole list of metrics.
Where does a tourist destination end and a nature area begin?
This page covers the destination as a whole: the town or resort, where its visitors come from, how the season runs and where it gets busy. Reserves, trails and viewpoints have their own page, nature areas and reserves.
Which neighbouring places use the same measurement?
The streets and squares of the town centre are covered under Cities & municipalities, and the centre as a whole under City centre footfall. Reserves and trails are measured as nature areas.
