WiFi analytics

WiFi analytics for retail: what the network you already run can measure

Your access points already see how people move past, into and through your stores. WiFi analytics turns those ambient signals into the footfall, dwell and conversion metrics that retail decisions run on. It needs no cameras or new hardware, and it identifies no one.

Works with Cisco, Ruckus, Aruba and other enterprise Wi-Fi, with no new hardware.

What makes it different

  • Uses the network you already run

The access points in your ceiling become the sensor network, so most stores start measuring with no new hardware.

  • Measures the whole store floor

Counts, dwell, paths and zones across the entire floor, which a door sensor cannot see.

  • Anonymised at source

Signals are anonymised and aggregated at source; no individual is identified and no personal data is kept.

  • Calibrated against manual counts

Every deployment is verified with manual control measurements matched to our own data.

Your Wi-Fi network already knows more about your stores than your till does: how many people walked past, how many came in, how long they stayed and where they went. WiFi analytics for retail turns those ambient signals into the store metrics that staffing, layout and campaigns run on. The access points are already in the ceiling and nobody is identified. The method behind it is the only footfall method in Europe approved by a data protection authority.

What WiFi analytics measures in a store

In a store, WiFi analytics turns the signals your network already picks up into the funnel that store decisions run on:

  • Passers-by and capture rate: how many walk past, how many come in, and what a new window or a sale sign changes.
  • Visitor counts: how many people enter, per hour, day and week, and how that curve moves over the season.
  • Dwell time and zones: where visitors linger, which rails or aisles they skip, and where the visit stalls.
  • Conversion: visitors against transactions, through an integration with your own sales system.
  • Store against store: the same measures in every location, so the rest of the chain can learn from the best store.

How it works without identifying anyone

Phones with Wi-Fi on send short signals as people move. The access points you already run pick them up without the visitor installing an app, logging in or doing anything else. Personal data is irrevocably deleted at source and only anonymous, aggregated statistics remain, so people are counted without being tracked. What is a probe request explains how one of those signals works.

The method is the only footfall method in Europe approved by a data protection authority, the Swedish IMY, so your privacy review starts from a question that has already been answered.

WiFi analytics vs cameras

Cameras and 3D sensors are exact at a point: they count line crossings at a door and can show real-time occupancy. Wi-Fi covers the whole space as one continuous flow, so it can describe dwell, paths and zone correlation across an entire store. Many venues combine the two, with a sensor where an exact door count matters and Wi-Fi everywhere else. When a supplier quotes one accuracy figure for every situation, that figure was measured in a lab and not in your venue.

Which networks it works with

WiFi analytics for retail works with the enterprise Wi-Fi platforms stores already run, including Cisco, Ruckus, Aruba, Mist, Huawei and Extreme. The network you have is usually enough; where a doorway or a frontage needs better coverage, one or two access points can be added. The full list of supported platforms is on works with your network.

From WiFi analytics to store decisions

Retailers we measure have used WiFi analytics to change opening hours after the flow outside showed neighbours trading while they were closed, to move staff onto the hours visitors actually arrive, to find the dead zones that dwell data exposed, and to benchmark whole chains on one funnel. The store-type pages show what that looks like in your kind of store: clothing stores, grocery stores, DIY and hardware stores and pharmacies.

Getting started

Most stores start on the Wi-Fi already in the building, with a small 3D sensor or LiDAR unit above the entrance where exact counts matter. Results go to the Explore dashboard or straight into your own BI through the API. For the camera-free route from start to finish, Measure store traffic without cameras walks through it step by step.

Having the large flows we have is a challenge. We constantly strive to have as efficient a station as possible. With the help of reliable data from the new measurement system, we can better plan where different service functions or stores are to be located and how we can adapt doors or passages.

Frequently asked questions

What is WiFi analytics in retail?

WiFi analytics in retail is the practice of turning the ambient Wi-Fi signals in a store into visitor metrics: how many people walk past and come in, how long they stay, which zones draw people and which are ignored, and how visits relate to sales. The access points a store already runs do the sensing, so it usually needs no new hardware and no cameras.

Is WiFi analytics GDPR compliant?

That depends on how the system handles the signals. Bumbee Labs' Wi-Fi method anonymises at source: personal data is irrevocably deleted and only anonymous, aggregated statistics remain. It is also the only footfall method in Europe approved by a data protection authority, the Swedish IMY.

Do we need new hardware?

Usually not. The method works with many existing enterprise access points, including Cisco, Ruckus and Aruba, so most stores start measuring on the network they already run. At most, one or two access points are added where a doorway or frontage needs better coverage.
